Multi Layer Drum Sampler AU / VST Instrument The MT Power Drum Kit is a free drum sampler offering the powerful, high-quality sounds of an acoustic, realistic drum kit. Samples have been specially recorded and processed to make them ideally suited for use in pop, rock and metal productions.
The MT Power Drum Kit Sampler differs from other, expensive drum samplers in that we have already pre-processed the sounds with compressors and EQs to make them a perfect fit for any mix. This is precisely where many drum sample programs fail. Some of the expensive plugins available on the market deliver a highly natural and dynamic drum kit sound as a solo instrument, but many fail as soon as they are supposed to be used for a complete mix in a powerful pop or rock production. Either the kick drum suddenly sounds much too slack or fuzzy in the mix, or the snare drum, which initially sounds natural and dynamic in solo mode, suddenly gets lost in the background in the overall mix, drowned out by the guitars and other instruments. But this is exactly where the MT Power Drum Kit is strongest. Its kick and snare drums come through clearly in any mixing situation – and still sound natural and not overly compressed.

The compressors built into the channels give you even more control over the level of compression. You can choose from thousands of assorted rhythms in the comprehensive Groove Library and compose your own drum accompaniment. In particular, the innovative functions for creating fills generate very smooth and realistic drum tracks.
Because we used high-quality cymbals and microphones for the recordings, the crash, ride and hi-hat cymbals sound especially refined and pleasant at various velocities. As early as during microphoning of the set and recording of individual samples, we took great care to replicate realistic circumstances.
Although doing so is almost impossible, we broke with tradition in sample recording, which calls for capturing every sound individually; Instead, our studio drummer played entire grooves. Then, we cut most of the necessary sounds out of the grooves, in various velocities, and processed them to deliver samples as realistic as possible. This is especially clear with our hi-hat samples, for instance. On the right-hand side, you can listen to demo tracks to hear the impressive results.

Mark the Editor over at has tipped us off to a cool free drum kit with a surprising feature set, albeit with a single set of sounds, however after taking it for a spin we think it is worth having in your plug-in arsenal, especially if you are starting out and looking for a nice drum kit. MT Power Drum Kit is made by a developer called Manda Audio and although the site suggests there is both a free and paid for version of the plug-in it now seems that the paid for version is being given away for free. You simply try to buy it and then you get directed to a page telling you it’s now free.
Obviously the MT Power Drum Kit doesn’t have all the features as EZdrummer. You can’t change various cymbals and different kits, but it does have a built-in mixer with compressors on each channel. Even better, it includes a bunch of high-quality MIDI grooves that you use to create some very realistic sounding beats, including full songs.

You can also use samples from other plugins and use a DAW to further customize the sound. The MT Power Drum Kit 2 is available in VST and AU formats, and it comes in 32 and 64 bit versions. The first time you open the plugin it will display a code that you have to enter on the power kit website to generate an activation key. They also have some MIDI mapping presets available on the downloads page to use the plugin with a drum sampler.
Compatible presets include Superior Drummer, EZdrummer, Addictive Drums, Studio Drummer, and others. MT Power Drum Kit 2 Video Demo.

A big thumbs-down from me. I'm not surprised they gave up trying to make any money out of this because the quality is mediocre, and I would imagine the demands for a refund were appearing in droves. They claim they've set up the eq correctly, but it's just plain wrong, and the inbuilt compressor controls do nothing.
The mapping feature in 'Settings' is all over the place too, whereby the octaves in midi are referenced wrongly, eg. The left crash is, by default, mapped to C#2, but it plays at C#3, and the rim-shot (Side-Stick) plays at C#2 but is mapped at C#1. My manual adjustments proved just as chaotic. The snare drum is useless. It sounds like someone has removed the snare (the loose spring that straps on underneath), which ends up making it sound like a tom with too much high-mids applied. As for the crash cymbals, they are just lightweight and limp. The floor tom has no depth, sounding far too shallow, so I had to give the 125hz band a massive 18dB boost (all the way up with the Acoustica EQ) in order to get it sounding anywhere near decent.
The kick drum sounds a bit powder-puff, with far too much high frequency content around the 8khz band that reveals a metallic click sound, and putting it though a compressor just brings this out even more. To get it sounding reasonably okay I have to kill the 8khz band completely and give some boost at 63khz. So much for this being correctly equalized already! Unfortunately, this free download is stuck with only one (lame) drum kit.
My conclusion is that I'm far better served by the Acoustica drum kit selection (I have Mixcraft 6 Studio), because with some applied EQ, compression and reverb I can at least achieve a nice big authentic sound. The hi-hat open and close effects may prove useful, but I haven't tried those properly yet - I'll try playing around with them when a future project needs it. I was very happy when I read about the MT Power Drum Kit! It looked like a scaled down EZ drummer, and I knew the MT could save me a lot of time arranging drums. But, I too think that the drum kit sounds harsh and thin, but I liked the simplicity of editing. So, I downloaded Kontakt 5 (free), which has a better drum kit (pop drums), and I simply dragged over my MT Drum Kit´s midi arrengements to a new midi track where I had Kontakt 5´s pop kit.
Now the drums sounds far better, and I still have the editing possibilities that MT Drums gives me! M@rkus wrote:I was very happy when I read about the MT Power Drum Kit!

I wonder if that's possible w/ Mixcraft's virtual drums.
